Week 14: The Call

Isaiah 2:5-6 English Standard Version (ESV)

O house of Jacob,
    come, let us walk
in the light of the Lord.
For you have rejected your people,
    the house of Jacob,
because they are full of things from the east
and of fortune-tellers like the Philistines,
and they strike hands with the children of foreigners.

After four verses of Isaiah telling what the glorious future of Judah and Jerusalem will look like, he now calls out to the house of Jacob, those 12 tribes that God set apart to be His people, His representation of Himself in the nations of the Earth, to walk in His light. How wonderful to be called to walk in the divine glory that is His alone. And much as we can only see certain things when revealed in the shining sunlight of our sun, to walk in the light of His Son, Jesus Christ, much will be revealed that was not seen or previously known.

It is amazing that He would call them back, continuing to love them even after He has rejected them. The only reason He would reject His people is because they have rejected Him. They have selfishly walked away from the commands of their God. With their actions they have declared no need for His protection or blessings. Even with all the amazing things they have seen and experienced as a people following Him, they have coveted the the ungodly things of other nations. They have taken on the false gods and their idols from peoples in the east. They have made fortune-tellers, an abomination in His sight, modeling themselves after their closest enemy, the Philistines. And they have made alliances with nations in fear of other nations, trusting not in the God who would bring protection from all the surrounding nations.

And yet still he calls them back.

It is amazing that He would call us back, continuing to love us even after we have rejected Him. We as Christians have sometimes walked away. With our actions some have declared no need for Him any more. Even with all the amazing things we have seen and experienced, we can covet the things of this world. We can easily find ourselves getting into astrology, and begin modeling ourselves more on the New Age. And we can start making allowances for other religions and things that are an abomination to God in our churches.

And yet still He calls us back.
