Week 15: I Got This
Isaiah 2:7-8 English Standard Version (ESV)
7
Their land is filled with silver and gold,
and there is no end to their treasures;
their land is filled with horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.
8 Their land is filled with idols;
they bow down to the work of their hands,
to what their own fingers have made.
and there is no end to their treasures;
their land is filled with horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.
8 Their land is filled with idols;
they bow down to the work of their hands,
to what their own fingers have made.
Previously,
Isaiah spoke out in verse 6 that the house of Jacob and the people in
it, had been rejected by God. These two verses we are looking at go
into more detail of why He has rejected them.
Their
land being filled with silver and gold, almost unending wealth is
listed as a reason. But why? Having that much wealth, be it a nation
or an individual, makes it very easy to rely upon your resources for
every need, as opposed to leaning on God's guidance and direction,
His power to bless you with what you need when it is needed. It is
putting the things of the world before you as a safety net instead of
the Almighty Creator of the universe. How often do we, as modern
Christians, do the same thing with even our limited amounts of
wealth?
Isaiah
then goes on to point out that “Their land is filled with horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.” This is in direct violation
of what God spoke to Moses when the law was being laid out. In
Deuteronomy 17:16 it says” Only
he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to
return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the LORD has
said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.'” Again,
this is putting trust in worldly things instead of God. How much
better it feels to have everything you need to fight a war than to
have to live in trust and hope that God will save the nation when
adversity comes. Even though it has been shown time and again that He
will come through for the nation when they humble themselves and seek
Him.
An
d then it is shown where their faith truly lies. In the idols that
have been created by their own hands. Ultimately this is saying to
God that is through my own labors I will shape what will save me. I
will create my own control. All of these things put together are
saying to Him “I got this.”
